Windfall Film’s two-part documentary about the ongoing development of London’s Crossrail won the slot and the channel’s most-watched show since an episode of University Challenge entertained 3.2 million people in January.
It was BBC2’s highest-rated show since Bake Off – Crème de la Crème gripped 3.5 million in March 2016.
It also smashed the channel’s 1.7m slot average for the past 12 months and beat the 2.5m who watched the first series opener in July 2014, with a whopping 3.4 million people tuning in.
